There are more BLOGS than people in Canada

I love data.  There I said it!  There is nothing like true hard facts to make me feel comfortable.  In a feed from Techmeme, Pingdom.com crunched the numbers for 2009 with regard to the internet and the trends are not surprising but the numbers are!

As of December of 2009 there are now over 200 million websites. Of those websites there are 126 million blogs currently exist (I’d be surprised if 10 people read this!). No wonder clients harp on being lost in the “cloud.” This is all more reason to look for alternative promotion and publication through other social media streams.  Looking at the numbers alone, I have to say it is daunting and it leaves new developers and business entrepreneurs with a challenging future. The article reports that 47,000,000 were added this last year alone! Again – that’s more than the population of Canada!

SPAM. Spam is still on the increase. In fact, a 24% increase if we believe this article. Also I find the number of 240 million emails being sent every day amazing.  They estimate that of those 240 million, 200 million or rather 83% are spam related – outrageous!  When you multiply that buy how much time is spent by people weeding through, even a portion of, these emails the cost to companies and people is enormous.

Sadly, only a marginal increase in Internet users at 18%. I feel this is a relatively small number however it is unqualified.  Does this number reflect people who have never had access before.  For example, countries that have limited access.  Or does this merely reflect those who ahve chosen to remain offline until now?

Social media has been popping.  As it stands, in 2009, there are more people on Facebook.com then people living in the United States. That –in a nutshell–is a telling piece of information with regard to social media’s penetration into the population.  The article quotes “350 million – People on Facebook.” and U.S. census bureau has the population of the U.S. at 308,537,237!
